The Play Reading group has been going for a number of years and has read a large number of plays of various genres. Recently we read plays by Arthur Miller, but are now reading Noel Coward’s ‘Present Laughter’ and after that we have a choice of ‘New Scottish Plays’.
Most of us have bought our own books of collections of plays, viz, Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Ibsen, Chekhov, Lorca, Miller, Six Great Modern Plays and various individual plays. Haddington Library has a good number of sets of 10 books which they lend to us on a regular basis, and for which we are very grateful. We have read all of them that appealed to us, and are now reviving some. New books have become very expensive so we try to access second-hand ones online; it’s not easy as very few are available in large enough numbers.
We have a tea break after reading our parts, and there’s always lively chatter about the plays and sometimes about current affairs.
At present, the group is full but we will start a waiting list if anyone else shows interest.
