More Information:
This is small group of friendly and welcoming people. No particular background in philosophy is needed, but we hope members will bring an enthusiastic interest in the kinds of questions that philosophy can address. These include questions in moral and political philosophy, questions of mind and human identity, existence and the nature of being, of the nature and extent of philosophy itself, and about the nature of knowledge and certainty. Our working approach is to read or listen to readings of important and accessible philosophical texts and to discuss the issues and questions to which they give rise. We try to keep an open minded approach and the freedom to challenge along with calls for clarification. A virtue of philosophy is that nothing is taken for granted. We are currently reading Bertrand Russell’s ‘The Problems of Philosophy’. Bertrand Russell was one of Britain’s great philosophers of the early 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950 and was one of the first figures to deliver the Reith Lectures on the BBC. He writing is lucid and engaging for readers.
There are two groups, A and B; Group A meet every third Thursday, Group B a week later.
