MEET: Fortnightly on a Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm between September and May

Venue: Members’  homes

The Spanish Conversation Group is a well established U3A group open to East Lothian residents who are Spanish language enthusiasts and can speak Spanish at least to a moderate (probably Intermediate) level or beyond. You do not have to be fluent in the language and this group would suit you whether you are practising Spanish to keep it up, returning to the language after a gap or hoping to build additional confidence in speaking and writing the language or building up your vocabulary alongside attending a more formal course. Spanish and American Spanish are both used.

We’re an informal, friendly and supportive group. None of the current group are fluent speakers and we help each other along with forgotten vocabulary and grammar although there is no formal instruction or suggested reading material. We meet at the home of members ( we take turns) fortnightly and each host provides tea/ coffee and biscuits – but no tiresome home baking! Typically there’ll be 4 – 5 people present.

The group usually agrees a set of topics to discuss between September and December and a second set between January and May. People are encouraged to come up with new ideas.  Some topics are about Spain or Latin America and others are more general. Before meetings, each member prepares a few paragraphs or bullet points about the topic chosen for that week to present to the group and everyone’s contribution generates questions and further discussion.

We welcome new members and would like to expand our group. If you’re interested and want to know more just contact the Group Leader, Catriona Hardman.
